shooting so far

On the shooting side of things so far we have conducted a social experiment outside Westfield London holding up a sign saying “I am Muslim, that means I am…” with a pen for people to write their responses. This was really interesting for us to see the response of different people – being ages, genders, race and religion. Maryam held the sign up and as she is Muslim it helped invite other Muslims to write what they thought.

With every word or phrase on this sign we want to incorporate that to structure our film. With each phrase being a different chapter. We will write down what each person said to Maryam and then incorporate that into those chapter.

mel- Another online muslim charity

CHARITY

http://tellmamauk.org/

This is an anti-muslim hate and islamophobia charity that acts as a right hand contacting service that allows people to call in and report religious attacks.

THIS IS HOW WE CAN CONTACT THEM:

Call us: 0800 456 1226, E-mail: info@tellmamauk.org, Twitter: @tellmamauk, SMS: 0115 707 0007, WhatsApp: 0734 184 6086

The fact that is has a whatsapp contacting service suggests that its quite personal.

Also on the website, there is testimonials written by people who has experienced it, so that people can read through them and express how the charity helped and supported them.

mel- victim support charity (address and number to contact)

This is a screen shot of the victim support charity, we can get visit the place(Maidstone is pretty central for all of us) and speak to the victim who has been affected by religious intolerance as well as speaking to the volunteers who are there to help them. I have also got a screen shot of the number that we can call to see if they can give us any info etc etc.

Jem - Fencing Documentary

Fencing Documentary -

  • 1st person
  • no narrator
  • factual and storytelling
  • directed and actuality

good shots used -
  • close up of her eyes behind the mask
  • when she is running and the voice over - enhances that they are her thoughts
    • she goes through the streets surrounded by others
  • seeing her in her natural form - sweaty, tired etc. nothing false, all real
  • putting her hat on, pulling up her trousers showing her going from a girl to a fencer - still the same person
  • shots of her fencing from far away (slightly behind a pillar) - enhances that it is real
editing techniques -
  • slow motion
  • when she is fencing in the darkened room there is always enough light on her that we can clearly see what she is doing - obviously staged however looks completely natural
  • pan up from feat to head when she is running, camera travelling at the same speed as her

mel- social experiment video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uBDju1vDOs

This link is about a social experiment in New York.

-Very interesting because its from a males perspective.
-The man was basically driven out of the area and harassed just because he was dressed in the faiths religious clothing.
-Its a sad thing to watch because not one member of the public thought about stepping in to help.- this is aggressive behavior, and is something that is going on everywhere we just dont see it.
-Making people feel unwelcome within the community and its makes muslims feel victimized because of negative actions.

Things to do:

Things to do:

  1. Look at Voice tape IZZY
  2. Look at fencing video JEMIMA - https://www.shortoftheweek.com/2016/08/05/nzingha/
  3. Watch Islam: My Life, My Religion - BBC Documentary - YouTube MARYAM
  4. Representation of Muslims in Media - YouTube
  5. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/7495384.stm
  6. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgKMI1wV0ps    about 'extremists' in Luton- popular presenter so could be interesting
  7. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrWYj-puTbw Nadiya (Bake Off) going to hometown Bangladesh MEL

Need to right down:
- what is the representation of islamic faith
- what shots used
- editing
- anything that you feel is effective and we could use

What is our aim of our documentary?
- A cry for acceptance
- want to show people that this faith is just like another
- people of a faith or no faith are all equal
- don't let extremists define a group
- want to portray a positive image- 'always see the good in people' (end message?)
- a religion based on love, respect and community- JUST LIKE ANY OTHER
- want to show opinions on current events and how society treats Muslims
- focus on day to day activities- pray, dress, mosque etc but don't be stereotypical- what does someone our age do everyday?
- following a faith does not control you, but teaches you certain ways about life- ones that don't effect other people, but make you run your life in a certain way
